Interwoven's Usability Enables Over 17,000 Employees To Share Ideas and Best Practices

Sunnyvale, CA - October 14, 2002 - Interwoven, a world-leader in Enterprise Content Management (ECM), today announced that the Thales Group, the global professional electronics company, is using the Interwoven 5 platform, integrated with IBM WebSphere Portal, to develop and manage content on an employee Knowledge Management (KM) portal. The KM portal is an intranet that currently allows 17,000 R&D engineers across Thales' business units worldwide to access, contribute and share tools, documents and best practice methodologies. The long-term intention is to make the portal accessible and relevant to all of Thales' 65,000 employees worldwide.

"Usability features have enabled Thales to build the technology platform that allows our staff to access and merge research and best practice methodologies across the corporation," explained Jean-Luc Plet, knowledge platform project manager for the Thales Group. "The Interwoven 5 software has made the development of the portal application easier and the contribution of content more accessible and flexible. An initial forecast suggests that if we are saving one to two hours per month of people's working time to find and retrieve information and multiply that by 17,000 people, then the large productivity benefits to Thales are evident at an obvious level."

A key selection criteria for Thales was that the ECM system provide a full spectrum of usability offerings targeting every user-class in the organization, allowing each contributor to use the software tools they are familiar with and application interfaces most appropriate to their expertise. Another key selection criteria is that the Interwoven system provided interoperability and seamless integration with IBM WebSphere Portal to enable the deployment and maintenance of content to the KM portal.

Interwoven ECM achieved the following at Thales:
- Business contributors now publish information to the portal directly without needing to learn new formatting requirements or applications. The KM team created TeamSite templates and editorial workflows that allow content contribution to be an automated process while ensuring brand and version control.

- Software developers use TeamSite to manage all the application code involved in the creation of the portal. Developers also use the code development tools with which they are already familiar, meaning a minimum of additional training being required.

Interwoven 5 software provides a scalable central repository that stores all of the current 10,000 KM information assets regardless of format such as PDFs, presentation slides, .exe files and video. The aim is to double the number of assets stored in the repository by the end of 2002. A single repository managed by a single server is making administration of the system easier and allows all contributors and content users to more easily find and retrieve needed assets.

"Enabling all employees to use familiar and intuitive business tools to manage content is a key requirement for ECM success. We are delighted that Thales KM portal is realizing immediate benefits from our approach," said Gilles Sournac, vice president of Interwoven Southern Europe. "Interwoven's close relationship with IBM ensures that all of our joint customers, in France and world-wide, receive the best available ECM expertise."

The KM portal implementation is based at the Thales Group global headquarters near Paris, France.
